Free Storyboard Templates

Printable PDF templates for every project type. Or skip the blank page entirely — generate storyboards from your screenplay with AI.

Templates Are a Starting Point. AI Is the Destination.

Blank templates give you empty frames to fill manually. StoryBirdie's AI reads your screenplay and fills them for you — shot compositions, camera angles, character positions, and blocking. Same output, fraction of the time.

How to Use a Storyboard Template

1. Print the template

Print on standard A4 or Letter paper. Landscape orientation for most templates. Use heavier paper (80-100 gsm) if you're drawing with markers.

2. Plan before you draw

Create your shot list first. Know what goes in each frame before you start drawing. Each frame = one shot from your shot list.

3. Draw compositions, not art

Stick figures work. Show camera angle, character positions, and key visual elements. Your storyboard is a communication tool for your crew, not a portfolio piece.

4. Annotate every frame

Fill in shot size, camera movement, dialogue, and action for each frame. These notes are what your DP and AD actually use on set.

5. Share with your crew

Photograph or scan your completed boards. Share digitally or print copies for set. Tape them near the monitor for quick reference during the shoot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a storyboard template?+
A storyboard template is a printable document with empty frames arranged in sequence. Each frame has space for a drawing or image, plus fields for shot number, description, dialogue, and camera notes. Directors fill in the frames to plan their shots before shooting.
What size should storyboard frames be?+
Standard storyboard frames use a 16:9 aspect ratio (matching HD video) at roughly 3×1.7 inches per frame. Three frames per row on A4 landscape paper is the most common layout for film and commercial storyboards.
Can I generate storyboard frames with AI instead of drawing?+
Yes. AI storyboard generators like StoryBirdie create visual frames from your screenplay automatically. Upload your script, and the AI generates compositions, character positions, and camera angles for each shot. No drawing required.
What's the best free storyboard template?+
For hand-drawn boards, our Standard Film Storyboard template (3-panel landscape PDF) is the industry standard. For AI-generated boards, StoryBirdie's free tier lets you generate visual storyboard frames directly from your screenplay — no templates needed.
